Lead magnets that actually convert
A lead magnet is a small, useful thing you trade for an email address. The best ones look suspiciously like paid work — because they should.
What a lead magnet is (and isn't)
A lead magnet is a specific, immediately useful resource that solves one narrow problem for your buyer. It is not a generic ebook, a whitepaper nobody reads, or a "subscribe to our newsletter" form. Those get you subscribers. Good lead magnets get you qualified subscribers.
The four formats that consistently work
1. Checklists
A one-page list of exactly what to do or verify. Works because it's finished in five minutes and feels like a shortcut. Example: "14-point pre-launch SEO checklist for SaaS marketing sites."
2. Templates
A fill-in-the-blank document that saves the buyer an afternoon. Example: "The client-onboarding email sequence we send at [agency]." The template quietly demonstrates that you know what a good version looks like.
3. Teardowns and swipe files
A curated collection of good and bad examples with commentary. Perfect for creative and consulting services. It shows judgment, which is exactly what the buyer is trying to evaluate.
4. Short email courses
Five to seven emails, one per day, teaching a small skill. Works because it extends the relationship past the opt-in and lets you write follow-ups that feel natural. Covered in more detail in lesson 4.
The specificity rule
The narrower the promise, the higher the opt-in rate. Compare:
- ❌ "Marketing tips for small businesses"
- ✅ "The exact three-email sequence we send after a discovery call"
Specific promises attract specific people. That's the whole point.
Where to promote it
- At the top and bottom of every relevant article.
- In the description of every YouTube video.
- In your email signature.
- On a dedicated landing page you can send cold traffic to.
What to skip
- Long PDFs. They optimize for length, not usefulness. If the buyer can't skim it in under 10 minutes, rethink it.
- Gated blog content. If it's an article, publish it. Gate the template or checklist that makes it actionable.
- Popups on the first paragraph. Let people read a bit before you ask.
What's next
A lead magnet is worthless without a follow-up. Lesson 4 covers how to write email sequences that turn subscribers into consultations.
